Literally could not disagree with this more, as a fellow student.

I can’t be bothered to write something long about this right now, but let me just say - one exam at the end of the year? Welcome to my degree. Welcome to the real world.

If you were a good student and a bright student you will still do well in those end of the year exams. Did you do Maths coursework? Nope, nor did I, yet I managed an A in Maths GCSE (2 exams at the end of the 2 year period) yet I got a B in both Biology and Physics, subjects which consist of exams and coursework. Endless resits to get an A is futile and makes a mockery of those students who actually get an A first time because they are bright and able and motivated. End of.

The current system IS easier to get a good grade in. You will realise this once you get to uni. if you fuck up an exam, there is no resit. You get that result. if you fail, you get a capped grade on your resit. In my year of A levels there were people who retook the same exam 3 times to get a better mark, that is utterly ridiculous. Why should you get longer than everyone else and pay your way into a higher grade? if you learn something 3 times yeah sure you’re going to know it. Those students who can’t afford to pay the £30 for a resit? They’re stuck with their grade.

Get the fuck over it and do the work when you’re supposed to. Hypocritical coming from me but yet again, classic case of people wanting something for nothing. If we hadn’t had resits or coursework I would’ve failed most of my GCSEs no question. Yet I came out with decent grades having never revised and barely attending school. It shouldn’t be that way.

I would have been fine with you disagreeing but, uh , ‘get the fuck over it’? NOPE

Just because YOU managed an A at the end of year exams it doesn’t suddenly prove that YEAH THESE NEW GCSE REFORMS ARE GREAT. You are one case. Not only that, but you’re using a singular anecdote to somehow justify Michael Gove’s condescending attitude to current qualifications.

“Welcome to the real world” is literally paradoxical to what you’re arguing in favour of. The ‘real world’ doesn’t consist of exams. The ‘real world’ as you will find many a journalist having agreed on over these past few days, is far better simulated with coursework.

“Did you do Maths coursework? Nope, nor did I, yet I managed an A in Maths GCSE” I never once said that coursework should be the main evaluation of every subject. I mentioned my coursework from Nazi Germany, because long term analysis in humanities subjects pushes a student to learn outside of a mark scheme, allows them to fully explore language and structure without the time constraint. Never did I say this would be the same for maths, of which I did not take at A-Level.

Also, “endless resits” no, the only chance of getting a resit was at the end of AS. Resits exist because with the nature of exams there is always the potential for a cock up on the day that would not reflect your true potentiality. Which is why the system, and the proposals of Gove, are so ridiculously arbitrary. And, personally, I paid for the £30 resit via the Bursary Fund, meaning I didn’t pay a penny. My taking a resit doesn’t mean I was a ~disgrace~ to those who got an A, it means I had a bad day. I originally got a C, but I pushed i up to a high A. That wasn’t just ability, that was circumstance.

“Do the work when you’re supposed to.” And, what, my making that post means I ‘never did the work’? I worked my arse off, thanks. I just happen to look on at elitist politicians calling my qualifications invalid and not truly deserved as wrong and indifferent.
